🧪 Special casesHow to remove yellow sweat stains

Yellow underarm stains · chlorine bleach backfires

White T-shirt armpits turn yellow not so much because of sweat itself, but because protein and sebum in sweat and the aluminum in deodorant (antiperspirant) build up in the fibers. It's not a stain that forms all at once but one that builds up over many washes, so removing it often takes more than one round too.

🔬 Why this order works

Yellow sweat stains are a combination of protein, oil and metal salts bound together. Enzyme detergent breaks down the protein and oxygen bleach breaks down the yellow color. Chlorine bleach can react with the protein and actually make it yellower.

🧺 Step by step

Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.

👕 By fabric

⚪ White cotton & linen

Two or three rounds of enzyme detergent + an oxygen bleach soak will fade it considerably. Don't use chlorine bleach.

🎨 Colors & synthetics

Same order, but test a color-safe oxygen bleach first. On colored clothes the problem is less the yellow than stiff buildup, and the same method loosens it.

🧶 Wool, silk & cashmere

Hand-wash the underarms of wool or silk knits in lukewarm water with wool detergent; if they've turned yellow, take them to a dry cleaner.

🚫 Don't

  • Chlorine bleach — it can react with the protein and turn yellower, and it damages spandex.
  • Trying to get it all out at once with hot water.
  • Putting clothes on right after applying deodorant.

⏳ If it has already dried

Yellow stains built up over years may never go fully white. Try repeating the enzyme detergent and oxygen bleach soaks over several days, and don't push it if the fabric has worn thin.

💡 Tip

Prevention is easiest. Let deodorant dry completely before getting dressed, and wash white clothes you've sweated in right away instead of leaving them for days, and yellow stains won't build up.

❓ Common questions

What about the advice to use baking soda and vinegar together?

Mixed together they neutralize each other, so you just get fizz and actually less cleaning power. Enzyme detergent and oxygen bleach are the more reliable choice.

The armpits of my colored clothes are going white and stiff.

That's antiperspirant buildup. Apply enzyme detergent, soak in lukewarm water, then scrub with a soft brush and it will loosen. No bleach needed.
